Two male pupils have emerged as the top performers in the 2021 Caribbean Primary Exit Assessment or CPEA Examination.
That’s according to the preliminary results released by the Ministry of Education.
The Ministry says the top performers are Richard James of the Kingstown Preparatory School and Isaiah Toney of the Georgetown Government School, both of whom achieved the highest average score of 96.80-percent.
A release from the Ministry says the preliminary results of the Exam indicate that almost 85% of registered students met the prescribed standard.
A total of 1593 from the 1895 candidates achieved at least half of the possible 500 marks. Of these, 751 are males and 842 are females. There is a slight decrease in the overall student performance this year, with 84.96% students meeting the prescribed standard compared to last year’s 86.16%.
The first 10 places were taken by: Richard James of the Kingstown Preparatory School; Isaiah Toney of the Georgetown Government School; Sela Gonsalves of the Sugar Mill Academy; Jarell Charles of the Kingstown Preparatory; Aziel Boston of the Sugar Mill Academy; Taiesha Martin of the Kingstown Government; Alexander Cummings of the Sugar Mill Academy; Lucia Hillocks of the Questelles Government Tegan Deane of the St. Mary’s Roman Catholic and Mikayla Durrant of the Kingstown Preparatory.

The Ministry of Education says the students’ final scores were derived from the aggregate scores of both components of the CPEA. That is, the External Assessment which consisted of Multiple Choice Tests in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies totalling 300 marks or 60% of the total score and from the School-Based Assessment which comprised a Project, a Writing Portfolio, a Book Report as well as Teacher Tests, Pupil Made Tests and Can-Do-Skills exercises in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts and Social Studies. The internal component was worth 200 marks or 40% of the total score.
45 out of 66 schools recorded a pass rate in excess of 80%.
