Minister of Transport and Works Julian Francis, has made it clear that the Government’s decision to cease the mining of sand at Diamond is in keeping with efforts to protect the nation’s coastlines.
He made the point during NBC’s Face to Face programme this morning, which focused on issues relating to sand mining in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Minister Francis said the practice of mining sand from beaches has been terminated in most other jurisdictions across the region, as Small Island states continue to battle with the impact of climate change.
Minister Francis said some level of mining is allowed on the Leeward side of the island, primarily because of logistical reasons.
