The Preservation Fund of St. Vincent and the Grenadines is working along with the SVG Botanical Gardens to protect a number of trees and plants which are said to be endemic in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Louise Mitchell, Director of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Preservation Fund, said that it is an important project as they seek to ensure that future generations have the opportunity to learn about these plants which are part of the country’s rich culture and heritage.
Mrs. Mitchell said they recently gave a grant to the SVG Botanical Gardens to propagate five hundred Lignum Vitae Trees also known as the tree of life and these trees will be planted throughout the country.
There will also be propagation of the National Flower which is the Soufriere Tree because the population of this tree has been declining over the years and it is important project to the Preservation Fund because it directly addresses the issue of Vincentian identity.
