The St. Vincent’s opposition New Democratic Party plans to sever ties with the Republic of China on Taiwan and establish diplomatic relations with main land China if the party forms government.
NDP president, Arnhim Eustace, on Tuesday August 23 said that his party’s policy shift is an acknowledgement of the United Nations accepted norm of the one China policy.
SVG and Taiwan established diplomatic relations in 1981, and SVG is one of four CARICOM countries which maintains diplomatic relations with Taiwan.
As recently as May 20, 2016, Mr. Eustace and members of the NDP attended a reception hosted by the Taiwanese Embassy to mark the inauguration of President Tsai Ine-wen.
