St. Vincent and the Grenadines was among various countries around the world to observe World Oceans Day yesterday, with the international theme this year being: Healthy Oceans: Healthy Planet.
World Oceans Day is an annual celebration held on June 8 to better understand and celebrate the Earth’s oceans.
Manager of the Mustique Fishing Village and Fish Market, Darnlee Hazell spoke at activities held to commemorate this day , he said ongoing work with Fishermen will be carried out to help protect endangered Marine Life.
Mr. Hazell said the Mustique fishermen have been educated about measures to ensure that Marine Life such as Lobster and Turtles are available for future generations.
He also stated that Mustique’s Fish Market has implemented strict rules which state that NO SEA TURTLE can be caught and sold there, Coral Nursery has also been set up to replenish the Coral Reefs which are dying, to safeguard the marine life which depends on the coral for survival.
