St. Vincent and the Grenadines is said to be the first country to introduce Heberprot-P, which is a drug used for the treatment of Foot Ulcers.
Steps are being taken by the Ministry of Health to effectively manage and control Diabetes, in a move to reduce the number of amputations carried out here in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Staff Nurse Arianna Taylor-Israel said that the Heberprot-P drug has enhanced the capacity of local health care professionals to cure foot ulcers in several patients here in SVG. Nurse Arianna Taylor- Israel who trained a year ago in Havana, Cuba has expressed that this was a new experience for her.
Since the introduction of the Heberprot-P drug the number of patients increased by 80%. Currently fifty two patients are being treated with this drug, some have already healed and were discharged from the hospital.
Joy and appreciation was expressed by a diabetic patient Althie Alexander who is also a beneficiary of the Heberprot-P treatment.
