A regional child rights advocate said reports suggests that there is a significant under-reporting of child abuse and molestation cases throughout the Caribbean region.
Trinidadian Attorney at Law, Dr. Margaret Burgess, spoke on the issue during NBC’s Face-to-Face Program this week.
Dr. Burgess, who was in the state to facilitate a Child Protection Policy Workshop hosted by the Wesleyan Holiness Church, said it represents a serious and growing problem which must be addressed.
Dr. Burgess said there is also a recognized tendency in the region to protect the perpetrators of these crimes.
