Eight Peace Corps Volunteers were officially sworn in today, marking the start of a two-year long deployment in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The new Volunteers are assigned to various Primary Schools through the Ministry of Education and will assist with the Ministry of Education’s Primary English Literacy Initiative.
Speaking at today’s swearing in ceremony, Acting Country Director of the Peace Corps Eastern Caribbean, Sara Lightner, outlined the main objectives of the initiative.
The first goal focuses increasing students’ success in the area of Primary English Literacy. The second is partnering with teachers in primary classrooms to provide effective teaching in the area in the area of Primary English Literacy. Whereas the third goal places emphasis on strengthening the relationship between schools and the community as a whole by involving grandparents, parents, siblings and the greater community.
Mrs. Lightner also expressed gratitude to the new Volunteers for dedicating their lives to serving others.
