There was heated debate on both sides of the House during this morning’s session of Parliament, during the debate on the Geothermal Resources Development Bill, 2015.
The National Geothermal Project is being implemented by the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines in collaboration with EMERA Caribbean and Reyk-javik Geothermal.
The Geothermal Resources Development Bill was tabled by Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves, who said Geothermal energy will reduce and stabilize the cost of electricity in SVG.
The Prime Minister said it has been recommended that the Project advance to the drilling phase which will cost 32 million U.S dollars.
He said drilling sites have been identified and it is estimate that these sites have the potential to generate in excess of the 60 megawatts of energy.
The Prime Minister said other assessments have been carried out and the cost of upgrades to the roads from orange hill to the identified drilling site will cost some two million U.S dollars.
He said the partners have also given the assurance that the project will not have any adverse effect on the natural environment.
