President of the Hotel and Tourism Association Kim Halibich says land based activities can have an adverse impact on marine life, although the effects may not be immediately apparent.
Mrs. Halibich made the point during NBC’s Views On Issues programme on Sunday, which focused on Marine Management.
She noted that the Caribbean is one of the most biologically rich and diverse marine regions in the world, and contains 10 percent of the world’s coral reefs.
And she pointed out that land-based pollution poses a great threat to the marine environment.
Mrs. Halibich said that are not many facilities in place for yachts, and laws relating to yacht holding-tanks are not enforced. This, she says, is one of the major threats to the survival of the coastal marine environment.
