The Pan American Health Organization, PAHO, Programme Specialist for St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Annique Wilson has explained why the study on the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV was carried out here last year.
Miss Wilson was addressing the consultation hosted by the Ministry of Health yesterday to discuss the results of the study.
She said the initial objectives of the initiative were to train nurses, lab technicians and other health care workers to collect specimen samples, discuss HPV, its associated factors with cervical cancer, and to find out the willingness of the participants to be vaccinated against the HPV.
Miss Wilson said the data received from the survey will serve as a guideline for the Ministry of Health as it seeks to improve the health of the nation, noting that vaccines can help to protect against the HPV strains that can cause cervical cancer.
