Local and regional delegates attending the Biennial Regional General Council and Seminar of the Evangelical Church of the West Indies, ECWI, are wrapping up their deliberations today at the Hotel Alexandrina at Prospect.
One of the decisions taken at the Conference was to issue a statement clearly setting out the position of the ECWI, in relation to same-sex marriage, and at a Media Briefing held yesterday, the organization stated clearly that it would not allow its Ministers to encourage or perform same-sex marriages.
Vice-Superintendent of the ECWI Reverend Gerald Keens-Douglas said that the organization expects that it would be pressured to change its position on the issue.
However, in response to a question posed at yesterday’s media briefing, Reverend Keens-Douglas said that the Governments in the region have not put any pressure on the ECWI to change its position on the issue.
Reverend Keens-Douglas added that the ECWI does however anticipate some social pressure.
The Evangelical Church of the West Indies, ECWI represents 52 constituencies throughout the Caribbean, Canada, French Guiana and the United States, stated clearly at a News Conference yesterday that it would not allow its Ministers to encourage or perform same-sex marriages.
