There were victories for Rising Stars (2), Duke, Wizards (2), East Blazers and Rising Stars (1) in the opening round of matches of the Vita Malt Bequia Basketball Championship at the Clive Tannis Hard Court in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.
In the second Division: Rising Stars (2) defeated defending Champions Blazing Heat 71-50. Leading the way for Rising Stars (2) was Cody Compton with 29 points, 4 steals and 1 block. Nicolas Lewis was Blazing Heats’ leading scorer with 12 points and 4 steals.
Wizards (2) had the better of Young Duke 48-41. The leading scorer for Wizards (2) was Anthony Thomas with 17 points and 18 rebounds. Jadeja Ollivierre with 12 points and 1 assist was the leading scorer for Young Duke.
In the First Division: Duke eased past Warriaz 63-55. I-SHAMA McCree was Duke leading scorer with 16 points and 2 assists and Jemuel Hutchins with a game high 26 points, 3 steals led the way for Warriaz.
Steveon Taylor with 18 points, 5 steals and 5 rebounds was the top scorer for East Blazers as they beat Wizards 80-56. The leading scorer for Wizards was Brandon Smart with 12 points.
And Rising Stars powered past Generals 53-28. The leading scorer Rising Stars was Kirstin Lampkin with 27 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1 block, while Claude Ramage with 10 points led the way for Generals.
The Championship will continue tomorrow. At 6:30 pm, Titlans will face Hawks, then from 7:30 pm, Rising Stars will tackle Wizards (2) and Generals will play against Duke at 9:30 pm.
