While discussing how to curb incidences of crime and violence, Corporal Mark Billy speaking on NBC radio’s “Views on Issues” programme, says that often times when the police are called out to an incident of domestic violence, the woman being abused refuses to press charges.
He says that this sends the wrong message to any child that might have witnessed the crime, and that the reduction of gender based violence has to start with the mothers.
Meanwhile Sergeant Sheryl James said that empowering women is one way to begin to curb incidences of gender based violence. She suggests that women need to take charge of their lives and not be totally dependent on the men in their lives.
