The Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment will be highlighting the importance of good nutrition this week, as it observes Nutrition Awareness Week under the theme Healthy Eating Active Living: Less Salt Healthier Life.
The activities are intended to promote good nutrition and wellness, and also to promote the National Food Based Dietary Guidelines, and this year the focus is on reducing excess intake of salt and sodium
The week-long programme also coincides with Caribbean Nutrition Day which is being observed today
In an address to mark the start of the week, Minister of Health Wellness and the Environment Clayton Burgin outlined the steps taken by the Government to reduce the vulnerability of the population to chronic non-communicable diseases such as high blood pressure, caused by excessive consumption of salt and sodium.
Activities planned for the week include radio programmes, a children’s Nutrition Quizz, Open Day at Clinics across the country, a se minar focusing on the dangers of excessive salt and a Mini Fair outside the Postal Corporation in Kingstown.
