Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Raymond Ryan, said the observance of World Food Day 2014 is intended to foster a greater appreciation for agriculture.
He was speaking at the recent launch of activities to mark World Food Day, which is celebrated annually on October 16th.
The United Nations General Assembly has designated 2014 “International Year of Family Farming”, hence the World Food Day 2014 theme: Family Farming, Feeding the World, Caring for the Earth.
Mr. Ryan said among the objectives of the activities is to encourage attention to agricultural food production and to stimulate national efforts to this end.
Mr. Ryan also said a committee was established to plan the year’s observance, with participation from a number of agriculture stakeholders.
