The Ministry of Health is urging Vincentians to maintain their vigilance in the fight to eradicate the chikungunya viral disease here.
The appeal has come from the Chairman of the National Surveillance Committee in the Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment, Dr. Rosmond Adams.
Dr. Adams noted that the Ministry of Health has been receiving support from the public as it continues the campaign to contain the outbreak, which was officially declared here during the month of April.
But, he said public interest may tend to fall off, as time goes by. He urged persons not to let their guard down, and to continue to take all the necessary precautions to prevent themselves from contracting the virus.
There are now 369 confirmed cases of the chikungunya virus here, and the Ministry of Health says the majority of the cases have been confined to the grenadine island of Bequia.
Chikungunya is transmitted to humans by the Aedes Aegypti Mosquito. It causes fever, severe joint pain, muscle pain, headache, nausea, fatigue and rash.
