Prizes for the first ever Lion Fish Derby will be presented today by the Fisheries Division in the Ministry of Agriculture
The competition was included in the Fisherman’s Day program on Monday June 9th for the first time.
Jeremy Searles, who is attached to the Fisheries Division said this competition was held as the Ministry continues with its efforts to reduce the population of the Lion Fish in the waters of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The prize giving ceremony will begin at 1:30 this afternoon at the Fisheries Division Conference Room.
The Lionfish is an invasive species, which is reported to be having a significantly negative ecological impact on native fish populations in Caribbean waters.
