St Vincent and the Grenadines opened its 2014 North American Caribbean Rugby Association NACRA Men’s team Championship with a 24-22 win over the British Virgin Islands in Tortola at the weekend.
It was a competitive match throughout, with St. Vincent building a 12-5 half time lead on the strength of wing Godfrey Matthews and flanker Anthony Joseph.
St. Vincent got its third try in the 61st-minute from Anthony Joseph for a 17-8 lead.
The British Virgin Islands reduced the lead with a try from replacement forward Simon Knight in the 68-minute to bring the score to 15-17.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines scored its bonus point try in the 75th-minute as Gilan Comas crossed for a converted try and a 24-15 score.
The British Virgin Islands pressed hard late in the game from Captain and outside center Donovan Staple in the 76th-minute, to come within two points of SVG’s 22-24.
