The Mayreau regatta and sporting committee held its third annual hairoun beer lion fish derby as part of its annual celebration last Thursday.
Speaking to NBC News, one of the volunteers on the committee, Nancy Saul- Demers said the lionfish derby saw seven teams competing from both Mayreau and Union Island who were all able to take 132 pounds of invasive lionfish out of the local waters.
Ms. Saul- Demers said while the fishermen are competing, they are able to work together to take the perilous fish out of the water in an attempt to protect the reefs.
The Mayreau Regatta volunteer said that while the lionfish does not belong in the Caribbean waters and considered and invasive species as it is a threat to the other fishes is a delicious delicacy.
