Volcanologist and Director at the UWI Seismic Research Center, Dr. Richard Robertson, is reminding Vincentians that the La Soufriere volcano is still active and has the potential to erupt at any time.
Speaking on NBC’s Face to Face programme this week, Dr. Robertson said the Center is collaborating with the National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO) to ensure that Vincentians are aware of the potential danger of the volcano.
Dr. Robertson said it is important that persons living in the various hazard zones implement disaster plans in preparation for any future volcanic eruption.
Dr. Robertson noted that the La Soufriere volcano is known to progress very rapidly from dormancy to active status.
The Seismic Research Center is partnering with to host a number of activities to observe the 35th anniversary of the 1979 eruption of the La Soufriere volcano on April 13th.
