A call has been made here for a Performance Appraisal System to be introduced for Teachers throughout St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Deputy Director of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College, Nigel Scott made the call as he delivered the feature address at opening of the 18th Biennial Convention of the St. Vincent and the Grenadines Teachers Union (SVGTU) held at the Georgetown Secondary School yesterday.
Mr. Scott said the certification of Teachers may have little impact on the performance of students, because a certified Teacher is not necessarily a good Teacher.
And he noted that more needs to be done to reward good Teachers and to hold the bad Teachers accountable for poor results.
Mr. Scott pointed out that the Ministry of Education is continuing to place heavy emphasis on Early Childhood Education. He said he hopes to see this emphasis replicated at all levels to ensure the holistic educational development of every child.
I am in total agreement with Mr. Scott. As a matter of fact, i think such a system should exist throughout the Public Service. For too long, in the absence of the Appraisal System, the certified are being recognized and promoted, while those who are the actual performers are being sidelined.
There is always a solution but also many loop holes. Until we truly love and care about what we do, then we will see changes.
