Close to 200 lionfish were caught yesterday in the first Lionfish Derby sponsored by the Tobago Cays Marine Park.
The exercise was held as part of the ongoing effort here to reduce the population of the venomous species in the waters around the
Southern Grenadines, especially the Tobago Cays Marine Park.
One of the organisers, Nancy Saul-Demers of the Mayreau Regatta and Sporting Committee, says six teams took part in yesterday’s Derby, catching a total of 182 lionfish, weighing over 90 pounds.
Mrs. Saul-Demers says the main aim of the event was to continue the thrust to significantly reduce the lionfish population in the southern grenadines.
Mrs. Saul-Demers says another Lion Fish Derby is set to take place on May 1st during the Mayeau Regatta.
