Schools in St. Vincent and the Grenadines will be reopened on Monday, January 13th, 2014.
The Ministry of Education says that the one week extension of the closing of schools is necessary because of the disruption caused by the floods experienced by the country on December 24th, 2013.
It says several schools are still without pipe-borne water, therefore more time is needed for the clean-up process.
In addition, the Ministry of Education is aware that many students and teachers impacted by the floods have lost important items including school books and uniforms as well as other school supplies necessary to equip them to attend school normally.
The Ministry of Education also notes that some schools are being used as emergency shelters and informs that arrangements are being made to relocate the occupants with the shortest possible delay.
The Ministry of Education further advises that teachers in some locations will be called upon to provide assistance in the social assessment process which will inform the needs-list of the persons affected.
