The Civil Registry Department is preparing to launch a Multi-Purpose Identification Project MPID, by the end of this year.
The project, which was launched in Grenada in January this year, is expected to facilitate the easy recognition of citizens from participating countries, through the use of a unique form of identification which includes the country code.
Speaking with NBC News on Wednesday, High Court Registrar Tamara Gibson-Marks said the Department is awaiting the green light from the OECS Secretariat to launch the project.
Mrs. Gibson-Marks said security is of critical importance to the Department, as they seek to prevent cases of identity theft.
